Robert Pyle Obituary

Robert Alan Pyle, 67, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on December 16, 2020.

Robert was born on December 5, 1953 to Quentin Pyle and Sarah Grimes Pyle in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from Hoover High School, he went on to study Journalism and Communications at Drake University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Masters. “Bob” attended the University of South Carolina for doctoral studies.

Starting in 1976, Bob worked at multiple Iowa news locations including KCCI-TV, WOI-TV, and WROC-TV.  At WPRI-TV in Providence, Rhode Island, Bob was a News Producer. At KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls, Idaho, Bob was an Anchor and Producer. In Rochester, New York, Bob worked as Assistant News Director and was presented the Ziff Davis Award for Excellence, the Associated Press Bay State Award and a Regional Emmy. Returning to Des Moines, Bob covered political news at WHO-TV and anchored at Radio Iowa.

Beginning In 1989, Bob pivoted to instructing and taught at Iowa State University, Indiana University, Winthrop University, SUNY Fredonia, and South Carolina State University. After retiring, Bob taught part-time at York Technical College.

Bob wrote and presented papers at the AEJMC National Convention and the AEJMC Southeast Colloquium. Bob was Teacher of the Year at Indiana University. In retirement, Bob wrote and published a book for young adults, Ping of Sagamore Hill: The Rough Rider and the Quest for the Precious Pince-nez.

Bob is survived by his wife, Nancy Pyle, of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Also, from Rock Hill, son Joshua Nypaver, daughter-in-law Melissa, and granddaughter Jenna. Daughter Lauren Nypaver Markman, son-in-law Cliff, and grandson Corben reside in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bob’s brother, Donald Pyle, lives in Des Moines. Bob was predeceased by Patricia O. Pyle, spouse.

Bob was an avid animal admirer who loved horses, dogs and cats. After he retired, he adopted two stray cats who will miss his attention and treats. Memorial services will be limited to family members.
