John Mathiason Obituary

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to John, a cherished member of our community, who passed away at the age of 75. John was born in 1948, Grand Forks, North Dakota to Omer and Shirlee Mathiason. A time marked by hope and resilience, traits that defined his remarkable journey through life.

John’s hospitality career started in the family business of hotels. He continued this with an exciting time at Jellystone Park Camp Ground. He then found his passion for the culinary arts and dedicated his career while leaving an indelible mark on the restaurant industry. With a passion for serving others, he honed his craft at Red Lobster where he delighted countless patrons with his culinary creations and warm hospitality. He was especially proud of traveling to Norway to purchase fish early in his career. His Red Lobster journeys traversed him through many states, people, restaurants and adventures. Including his rise to, New Business Development,  that took him to Orlando, Florida and through Canada, some of the proudest years of his career. John finished his career as an Operating Partner for Fatz Cafe in North Carolina.

Beyond his professional endeavors, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He possessed an unwavering enthusiasm for the thrill of lottery tickets, finding excitement in each scratch. His love for golfing knew no bounds, as he relished the camaraderie and challenge of the green, finding solace and contentment in each swing. John’s life was punctuated by remarkable moments on the golf course, none more memorable than making not one but two hole-in-ones.

John’s presence illuminated the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His infectious laughter, compassionate spirit, incredible stories and boundless generosity endeared him to all who crossed his path. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience that will continue to inspire and uplift us in the days ahead.

In the quiet moments, as we reflect on John’s life, let us find solace in the memories shared, the laughter echoed, and the love everlasting. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit will forever dwell in the hearts of those he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you scratch off a lottery ticket in his honor.

Rest in peace, dear John. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who knew you.

John will now be at rest with his family that proceeded him in death; his parents, Omer and Shirlee Mathiason, his sister, Marcia Lamb and brother, Mark Mathiason Sr..

John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Susan Mathiason. His three children; Laurie [Steve] Sturgeon, Abby Mathiason and Nick [Lydia] Mathiason. His three grandchildren Keaton Sturgeon, Elsie Mathiason and Elin Mathiason.
