Evelyn Gentry Obituary

Evelyn Beckman Gentry, “LuLu” (as known by her mother and father’s side of the family), 80, of Rock Hill, SC and formerly of Huntsville, AL, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 29, 2020 at Piedmont Medical Center surrounded by all her loving children. She was born September 17, 1940 in Lawrenceburg, TN, daughter of the late Lt. William H. Beckman and Ruth Coker Beckman.

She was a loving mother who dedicated every aspect of her life to loving her family and raising her children to be responsible and hard-working men, but more importantly to always praise and worship the Lord and make Him the center of their lives.  She never met a person she would not speak to and would always lend a hand to help them even if they didn’t ask. She was a selfless woman who always put others before herself but also always put God above all else.

She was an ardent Catholic who never missed a mass on Sunday or other holy days of adoration.  She joyously prayed the Rosary every day without exception. She always prayed for the sick and dying and anyone in need of prayers.  She was a true and fervent steward of Christ and the Word of God, praying with and encouraging all that she met to pray and worship the Lord.

In the small amount of time, she did not spend praying for or helping others, she enjoyed watching Alabama Crimson Tide play football.  Her love of the Crimson Tide came from her deep love of the state she in which she grew up in and the love of her family that grew up with her.  She was also known for her “Southern Hospitality”, offering food and comfort to anyone who visited the home.  Everyone knew to go to her home hungry because she was not taking “no” for an answer. She always strove to make sure people felt welcome and loved.

Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life.  Nothing made her happier than visits from her children and grandchildren. Most important to her was God and her family and she will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and child of Christ.

She leaves a lasting legacy to be cherished by her survivors, her sons, Thomas Melvin Gentry Jr. and wife Heather Gentry of DeBary FL, John Michael Gentry and his wife Kim Gentry of Deltona FL, Joseph Matthew Gentry Sr. and his wife Beverly Gentry of Dallas, NC, and James Brian Gentry of York, SC, and her grandchildren Brianna Mathis, Brittany DeFiore, Nina DeFiore, Stephen DeFiore, Luke Gentry, Payton Elizabeth Gentry, Gage Michael Gentry, Andrew Bolding, Matthew Bolding, Joseph Matthew Gentry Jr., Jackson Thomas Gabriel Gentry and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A Celebration of life service will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 7-8 pm at Bass Cauthen Funeral Home.
